Music legend Kenny Ball unveils Radio Addenbrooke’s new look

During an evening reception held at Addenbrooke´s Hospital yesterday, jazz legend Kenny Ball celebrated the continuing success of hospital radio station, Radio Addenbrooke´s, and launched its contemporary new look.

Radio Addenbrooke´s decided to update its image, following several years of growth and development, which led to the coveted Hospital Radio Station of the Year award in 2004. "The station has reinvented itself over the last 10 years," explained Jim Carrington, the logo project coordinator. "We wanted to reflect this by launching a new look."

Designed by Stefan Strichen, the new logo came from a collaborative project with the Cambridge School of Art at Anglia Ruskin University. As part of their final coursework, graphic design students entered a competition to design a new look that reflected the fun, caring and entertaining principles of the hospital radio station.

"This project has provided an excellent opportunity for students to engage in a live project which interacted directly with the community" commented senior lecturer, Will Hill. "I´m delighted with the work they have produced and the way in which it has developed their understanding of the working relationship between the designer, the client, and the public."

After unveiling the new logo and presenting a certificate to the winning designer, celebrity guest Kenny Ball said "Radio Addenbrooke´s is a brilliant service. It brings such relief and entertainment to patients´ stays in hospital. No visit to hospital is pleasant, but this personal service - where volunteers go and talk to patients and then play their songs and build shows around their needs - is a brilliant way to ease the stress of a hospital stay. Tonight has been a great opportunity to celebrate the success of the station and to commend the brilliant design of this new logo." He added: "Addenbrooke´s Hospital is a fantastic organisation and we are so lucky to have it."

Winning designer Stefan Strichen was delighted by his win: "I am really pleased. It has been a great experience working with Radio Addenbrooke´s and it has given me an insight into how to tailor my creative skills to clients´ needs."

Chair of Radio Addenbrooke´s, Richard Saunders expressed his gratitude to the students and supporters: "It has been really great to work with these students and Anglia Ruskin and I´d like to thank all those who were involved in this. I´m also grateful to all the supporters of Radio Addenbrooke´s who have helped us by providing sponsorship or equipment over the years. Without their help, we wouldn´t be able to provide this brilliant service. But, of course, my biggest thanks goes to the volunteers who tirelessly dedicate their time and effort every week to creating great shows and bringing light relief to patients´ lives."
