Radio Addenbrooke's scoops top award

Gill Edwards from Radio Addenbrooke's takes a request from patient Olive DavillRadio Addenbrooke's has been named station of the year in the 2004 Hospital Broadcasting Association awards, winning the top prize of £1,000 and a trophy. The annual awards recognise the best in hospital broadcasting, paying tribute to top technical and artistic standards.

To enter, the team of 40 volunteers who run the station had to produce an audio documentary about it and the services it provides. Dave Nicholson, the awards' co-ordinator, said: "Radio Addenbrooke's produced a professional package which reflected the production values of the station. Judges were impressed with the involvement of staff and the local community."

Jim Carrington, programme controller, said: "We have never entered the competition before and there are more than 250 hospital radio stations in the UK and about 50 of these entered the awards. I almost felt like an imposter being there for the first time and then to walk away with the award was fantastic."
