Radio Addenbrooke’s…bringing Open Day to the bedside
Radio Addenbrooke’s is bringing the hospital’s Open Day to patients’ bedsides in a 12-hour live broadcast on Saturday 3 July. This is the first time that inpatients have been able to get involved in the hospital's open days, which take place once every two years. The special broadcast will include requests collected from patients on wards, competitions, interviews with staff and visitors and reports on the main attractions.
Jim Carrington, programme controller, explained: “Everyone should have the chance to join in the fun on Open Day - even if they are confined to a hospital bed. We will be mingling with the crowds and reporting on the various activities to bring the atmosphere of the day to Addenbrooke’s inpatients”.
The radio station also celebrates 50 years of broadcasting this year, and the Open Day session will help mark this milestone.
Radio Addenbrooke’s broadcasts to patients every evening during the week and at various times over the weekend, with the aim of making patients’ stay in hospital as comfortable and pleasant as possible. Most shows are music-based and include competitions to encourage listeners to phone in and get involved. As well as manning the radio station, volunteers collect requests from patients on the wards on a daily basis. The station’s work was recently recognised when it was named Station of the Year in the 2004 Hospital Broadcasting Association awards.
The Radio Addenbrooke’s broadcast is just one of many activities planned for the hospital’s Open Day. Doors open from 1000 hours to 1600 hours, and the whole day is free of charge. Open Day gives the public the chance to look behind the scenes and take part in activities from visiting an operating theatre to having their favourite toy checked over in the ‘Well Teddy’ clinic.
